There is a new scam around at the moment aimed at businesses.
The defrauders have somehow registered a business for vat online and have engaged with HMRC which then gave them access to the online system. This allowed them to change the bank details and file false vat returns to gain a refund. Some victims were already vat registered which hasn’t deterred their efforts.
HMRC have stopped all these attempts, but we have heard of businesses that are still waiting for actual vat return refunds and can’t gain access to their system to confirm their bank details are correct. This is because HMRC are currently dealing with this issue.
We have also heard of messages left on voicemails asking people to contact the HMRC on 0845 302 1427. HMRC have confirmed this is not one of their phone numbers and they have not attempted contact.
If you have been contacted by the HMRC recently and are unsure, or would like any further information please don’t hesitate in contacting us on 0121 711 2468 or 02476 518 555.
