HMRC releases taskforces for September 2012

HMRC has changed it focus with the launch of new taskforces across the UK.

The sectors that are deemed to be high-risk and will be the focus of the investigation include:

  • Hair and beauty trade in the North East
  • Restaurants in the South East and Solent
  • Grocery / retail trade in Wales and North and South West England
  • London lawyers
Collectively these taskforces aim to recover more than £19.5 million as these specialist teams will visit traders and examine their records, in addition to carrying out other investigations.

Director General Enforcement and Compliance for HMRC, Mike Eland, said:

“These taskforces bring together specialists from across HMRC to find people who are not paying what they should. If you have paid all your taxes you have nothing to worry about. But for those deliberately evading tax, be warned that HMRC is coming after you.

“This is not an empty threat - HMRC can and will track you down if you choose to break the rules. We are on target to collect more than £50 million as a result of taskforces launched in 2011/12.”
