Solihull Chamber News Column - 14th Spetember 2017

As one of the bosses of a Solihull accountancy firm I was interested to read a recent press release which purports to know the top five questions that employees are afraid to ask their employer.

A survey of 1000 UK professionals which was run by CV-Library, an online job site says that the top most awkward question is can I have a pay rise? (62.1%). Next up is can I work more flexible hours? (34.5%). One which really surprised me was can you help me with a task? (27.6%) and also can I take some time off? (24.1%).

I would hope that my own office culture is a comfortable one where employees can ask if they feel they rightly deserve a promotion. The advice from the study is to approach the subject carefully and professionally, while it also acknowledges that it may be nerve-wracking.

I think it helps to know that bosses are human beings too and it’s vital that you do what’s best for your career.
