Sharon Jeffery - Alcester ride
It was just a normal day in the world of the Prime Accountants Group until around 4.30pm, all of a sudden there was a fantastic buzz that made everyone move away from their desks; it was the launch of our Gold Postbox Cycle Challenge and the first route was about to start!
The atmosphere was intense as all 18 cyclists started to get ready for the big moment, the office (normally full of business professionals) was now a big changing room with lots of lycra, and people squeezing into lycra! Late afternoon cups of coffee were substituted for banana’s, trail mix and energy bars.
Added motivation was the fundraising total that had been broadcast earlier that day…. We had successfully managed to secure sponsors for 31 of the 62 gold postboxes and our total was a staggering £10,305.40, 52% of our overall target.
To add to the excitement, the Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Joe Tildesley, joined us to blow the whistle and send us on our way. Nerves were a plenty as 13 riders from Prime and 5 guest riders hit the streets of Solihull smack, bang in the middle of rush hour, however it wasn’t long before the busy city streets were behind us and the beautiful open road lay ahead.
With a combined age of 670 (!) the pace was perfect for all abilities, fitness freaks to the occasional cyclist, and with plenty of time to admire the surroundings we felt a million miles away from the busy-ness of the working environment.
A few ‘scenic’ stops were required along the way for refreshments, and it was remarkable that no-one managed to get lost in the many quintessentially English watering holes that we past along the way, but the group remained together and with a mile to go we all got very excited.
A small crowd of colleagues, family, friends and support drivers welcomed us to Alcester and amongst the crowd we could just see what we had ridden 22 miles for; the first gold postbox of our challenge!
It had begun- 22 miles down, 3605 to go!
