Coventry Record Producer to set up Music Academy

GRAMMY Award-winning Coventry record producer Roger Lomas wants to set up a centre of excellence for pop music in the city.

Roger, who recently worked on DVDs for Ozzy Osbourne & Happy Mondays and re-recorded Roy Wood’s classic hit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, wants to create a music academy where students are taught by Coventry’s finest & most experienced musicians & technicians who Roger believes will be the perfect role models & motivators.

The only person in Coventry to have won a GRAMMY Award (for producer/engineer on the Best Reggae Album of 2002), Roger is seeking advice about funding the project from accountants and business advisers Prime Chartered Accountants.

Laurence Moore, a partner with the firm who also acts for local bands and entertainers, such as BBC

radio presenter Bob Brolly, said his firm had been asked to prepare a feasibility study.

“Roger has been Coventry’s ‘Mr Music’ for 40 years and he wants to put something back into the city. He has an enormous amount of both retro & state-of-the-art studio recording equipment which he wishes to make available to talented youngsters in the region.”

Roger, who is best known for his production work with 2 Tone bands achieving 18 hit singles along the way, was also an extremely successful musician in his earlier years as lead guitarist of Coventry band The Sorrows, who in addition to achieving chart success in the UK & Europe were hugely popular in Italy where in the mid sixties at the tender age of 17 worked & lived in Rome performing on sell-out stadium tours & TV shows. Although officially ‘hanging-up’ his guitar in 1979 as his record production career took off he returned to the stage briefly for a four month period in 1989 to perform 60 shows & several TV appearances after joining the 60’s band The Fortunes.

Roger’s recent projects include the likes of The Bluetones, Elkie Brooks, Echo & The Bunnymen and a re-mix of a classic recording of ELO from a 1978 Wembley Arena concert, wants the academy to cater for technicians as well as musicians and has already lined up the expertise of local music industry figures who are recognised globally in their respective fields.

“There is a wealth of potential talent in this region and the academy will be a centre of excellence for anyone wanting to be part of the music business,” said Roger. “But, unlike the courses at colleges and music schools, it will not be limited to term-times or to weekdays. Creativity doesn’t stop at 5pm. I want the academy to be open late into the night as well, when many creative people are at their best.”
