Coventry Accountants Win Payroll Contract for SUBWAY® Franchisee

In April 2006 Prime (formerly Pilley & Florsham) won the contract to handle payroll for the franchisee of the city’s SUBWAY® stores.

Coventry entrepreneur Daljit Nahil, who opened the first SUBWAY® store in The Burgess in 1999, now has six outlets serving 10,000 customers a week - and plans to open ten more stores in Coventry alone.

“It was taking me a day a week to handle the payroll; that’s 50 days a year, time I could ill afford to lose,” said Mr Nahil, who opened his sixth outlet in March at West Orchards shopping centre. “I spoke to my bank about it and they recommended using Paysolve, the payroll arm of Prime Chartered Accountants.”

Mr Nahil, who was previously in the apparel trade with his father, became a SUBWAY® franchisee after his father’s friend said he had seen how rapidly the chain had taken off in the United States. He comments: “He flew across for my sister’s wedding and told me the SUBWAY® chain was expanding rapidly in the US and I should look at franchise opportunities. The SUBWAY® chain came to the UK ten years ago and is already a household name here.”

Mr Nahil, who is also the SUBWAY® chain’s joint Development Agent for the West Midlands, said the group planned to open 200 outlets throughout the West Midlands and was currently looking for more sites, including non-traditional locations such as drive-thru, convenience stores, hospitals, forecourts and airports.

Jamie Skelding, a partner with Prime Chartered Accountants, said the cost of employing someone in-house to handle payroll could be prohibitive for many companies, especially when they considered the consequences of that person being ill, or leaving, or the computer crashing.

There was also the additional expense of the payroll software itself, together with the regular up-dates and maintenance. “Payroll is a complicated issue and it is often more cost-effective – especially for small companies - to employ a professional service rather than risk losing both money and time keeping up with changes in legislation.

“Mr Nahil is a good example of a businessman who wants to spend more time working on his expanding business, and less time tied up with the paperwork.”

Paysolve currently has more than 125 clients, including scores of local companies, the UK operations of American and European companies, and London-based organisations such as Doctors Healthcare Company.
