Coventry Accountants to Avert Company Hijacking Scams

A Midlands firm of accountants and business advisors is helping local companies prevent fraudsters from hijacking their company details and then stealing from them.

Laurence Moore, managing partner at Prime Chartered Accountants in Coventry, said this latest scam called ‘identity theft’ involved crooks falsifying a firm’s documents at Companies House and then ordering expensive goods or services to be delivered to a bogus address.

He said that once the fraudsters had chosen their victim, they manually submitted a form to change that company’s address, and sometimes the addresses of company directors as well. They were then free to use that company’s creditworthiness to order goods and services, which are then delivered to the bogus address and used or sold on.

Mr Moore said the first the company or its directors might know of the fraud is when the supplier tried to enforce payment.

“We have become increasingly concerned about the risk to our limited company clients and have, therefore, invested in a very cost-effective preventative system which runs alongside our online annual return service,” he said.

The new ‘company monitoring system’ will immediately alert Prime if someone files any change of details – be it a change of registered office or the addition of a new director.

“As soon as any document arrives at Companies House, our system will alert us so that we can check its legitimacy. “This will protect our clients from the potentially very damaging financial consequences, which could arise if a company’s identity was stolen and abused.”
